Outline of Final Research Achievements

This research investigated the representations and discourses around sexual minorities in Japanese newspapers and parliamentary debates by using a method of corpus-assisted discourse studies. Using this statistical method made it possible to analyze large-scale data both quantitatively and qualitatively. Specifically, the research investigated the following three: ①discourses and representations around same-sex marriage in Japanese national newspapers, ②how supporters and opponents of same-sex marriage legitimated their positions in Japanese parliamentary debates, and ③how different political parties discussed the bill to promote the understanding of LGBT in parliamentary debates.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

2015年に東京都渋谷区と世田谷区がはじめた同性パートナーシップの全国的な広がりや、2019年に始まった「結婚の自由をすべての人に」訴訟により、LGBTQ+を含むセクシュアルマイノリティの権利についての理解が深まりつつある。本研究では、メディアにおけるセクシュアルマイノリティの描かれ方や、国会において同性婚やLGBT理解増進法がどのように議論されているかを大量のデータを解析することで統計的に分析した。分析結果は、今後同性婚の法制化等の権利を推進していくにあたり、どのような描き方や説得の仕方がより効果的なのかということを示唆しており、報道関係者等が活用できるような内容を提示している。
