Outline of Annual Research Achievements

My expected research activities during FY2020 have been altered due to the COVID-19 international crisis, which has prevented me to visit the libraries and archives containing key documents for the advance of my research. That's why I haven't used the funds corresponding to FY2020 and I have transferred them to FY2021.
In absence of the archival research, in FY2020 I have focused on the textual analysis of several of Collado's work, the relative chronology of their composition and the study of the context of his works. Some results of this research have been published in two articles issued in 2020, and will be presented in three international conferences in the near future. The first article deals with Collado's prologue to his Ars grammaticae and the overall conception of his ideas on Japanese language. The second one is focused on the context of confrontation between the Jesuits and the Mendicant orders in the evangelization of Japan and the key role played in this dispute by Diego Collado.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The coronavirus crisis has altered significantly my research plan. The main alteration of the expected development of my research has been the impossibility of accessing the libraries and archives with documents of essential importance for my research, most of them located in Spain.
In this difficult situation I had to focus on different dimensions of my research, mainly in the textual analysis of the texts to be edited and the study of different aspects of the historical and cultural context of Collado's works. With this perspective, even though I didn't have access to many essential documents, I have managed to carry out significant advances in my research.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In FY2021 and FY2022, I will try to compensate the lack of archival research in FY2020, as long as the global situation allows me to travel to Spain to visit libraries and archives. In this dimension of my research, I will work on some already identified documents of great importance for my research present in different archival collections in Madrid (mainly the Archivo Franciscano Ibero-Americano and the Archivo Historico Nacional). Some of them are previously unknown documents that shed a new light on the context of confrontation and dispute between religious orders in Japan that was the origin of Collado's works. Other documents are related to the textual history of his works, and will lead to the first critical edition of his complete works based on all the documentary evidence available. With these documents, the process of editing Collado's works will be progressing to its completion in FY2022 and FY2023, along with the detailed annotation of all of them and the study of the historical and cultural context, with a new perspective on the disputes among religious orders, that accompany the critical editions.

Causes of Carryover

Due to the coronavirus crisis, I have not been able to carry out my research as expected during FY2020, especially because I was not able to visit Spanish libraries and archives that contain key documents to my research. That's why I have requested to transfer my FY2020 funds to FY2021. I will use the funds to carry out the necessary research in Spanish libraries and archives, as long as the global situation allows it, and to purchase electronic devices necessary to carry out my research.
