Outline of Final Research Achievements

The purpose of this study is to investigate and analyze the narrative style of "classical Hollywood cinema" from the perspective of "economy". The term "economy" here refers to both the economic activities of film companies that produce films for profit, as well as the "efficiency" of the narrative storytelling found in films. Although the restrictions on going abroad due to the effects of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) forced changes in research methods and subjects, the study of various discourses (Stanley Cavell, Parker Tyler, Alfred Hitchcock) allowed us to grasp the reality of diverse interpretations of the economy of the classical Hollywood cinema.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

「古典的ハリウッド映画」は、現在においてもなお、物語の「効率性」が重要な特性であり美徳の一つとして考えられている。しかし、本研究を通して明らかになってきたのは、物語における効率性の達成と、製作予算といった経済的な意味での効率性が必ずしも一致しない、両者の複雑な関係性である。とりわけ、観客側の視点から古典的ハリウッド映画を理解するならば、そこには語りの効率性（それに伴う「わかりやすさ」）を逸脱する様々な要因を見いだすことが可能となる。こうした理解は、古典的ハリウッド映画という映画群を一つの固定された様式としてみなす視点を相対化するうえで、重要な貢献を果たしたと考えている。
