Outline of Annual Research Achievements

The second year of funding has been extremely successful. Domestic research trips were conducted and the material was used to write a book chapter for the Routledge Handbook of Folk Horror and is currently being integrated into a book proposal for University of Wales Press. A presentation was given at the Royal Geographical Society's 2021 Annual Conference and a keynote talk delivered at The University of Tokyo. I co-authored a book on cultural geography, published one article and one book chapter, had a book chapter and article accepted for publication, and had two abstracts invited for full manuscript submission. I was also made a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and became co-editor of the first ever book series dedicated to literary geography (University of Wales Press).

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

As was the case in 2020, international conference attendance and archive documentation at Norfolk County Archives, UK, was not possible due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Some conferences were cancelled entirely due to the pandemic and one co-authored paper was not able to progress as planned due to the travel restrictions. However, domestic fieldwork and archive research were possible and much progress was made in writing and disseminating research from the project. A book series in "Literary Geography: Theory and Practice" was established with University of Wales Press and a proposal is currently being prepared for review. Restricted travel allowed additional time to work on publications and therefore much more writing was possible in the second year than originally planned.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

Year 3 continues with the gathering and publication of research and conference presentations. The following is planned for Year 3: 1) an article on literary geography and urban folklore will be submitted to Revenant Journal (July); 2) a book chapter on literary geography and the ghost story will be submitted to the Palgrave Handbook of the Ghost Story (August); 3) a book proposal on literary geography and folklore will be submitted to University of Wales Press (August). I have co-organised a session on literary geography at the RGS 2022 Annual Conference (UK) where I will also present a paper on Tono Monogatari and literary geography. A presentation on Lafcadio Hearn and literary geography will be delivered at the Fantastic Geographies Conference at University of Dortmund, Germany.

Causes of Carryover

Due to the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, it was not possible to conduct international research in archives or to attend international conferences in person as planned in Year 2. However, circumstances surrounding international travel and the restrictions placed on attending in-person conferences have since changed, therefore the additional amount available in Year 3 will be used for attending international conferences in the UK and Germany, and to conduct research in the Norfolk County Archives. The additional amount will also allow for further research to be conducted in Japan.
