Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the first year of this project I focused on both the phonological and morphological aspects of lexical stratification in Japanese and Korean. To start with, I have been working on a catalogue of strata-specific phonological and morphological patterns in the two languages. In a first case study, I worked on construction-specific accent patterns in Japanese and Korean in order to find out more about the relation between phonological and morphological structure in the two languages. Some initial findings related to this topic were presented at two different research meetings. In another case study I worked on vowel harmony in Korean, a morphophonological process which only applies in two lexical strata. I have already written up my findings on this topic in a research paper. On the morphological side I have focused on the definition of roots, stems, and words in both languages, and their status across the different lexical strata. I am planning to present my initial findings on this topic in the second year of this project, and write up my conclusions in a number of papers.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
I have been able to work on both the phonological and morphological side of lexical stratification in both languages and I have got a good picture of how to proceed my research on lexical stratification in Japanese and Korean from here. More concretely, I have developed a way on the basis of which morphological and phonological stratification in the two languages can be insightfully compared.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the second year, I will start with further developing my analysis of morphological structure in Japanese and Korean. Following this, I will analyze both morphological and phonological stratum-specific patterns in both languages from the perspective of this morphological framework. Furthermore, I will also consider the different pragmatic functions of words in the different lexical strata. I would also like to use the second year to write up and submit several papers on the topics I have been working on since the start of the project.

Causes of Carryover |
Although I have collected a number of reference works and theoretical works related to the topic in the first year of the project, there is still a reasonable amount of literature that I have not been able to consult yet. Therefore, I would like to continue collecting relevant literature in the remaining years of the project. Apart from this, I would like to purchase some databases on CD-ROM in order to enable corpus-based studies. Apart from these general expenses, I will need to cover travel expenses for conferences and research meetings in case they start to be held in person again.
