Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Thanks to the grant I received from JSPS, I have recruited two native English speakers who have a lot of experience in EFL teaching in order to rate the essays. The raters coded the errors of all the essays to evaluate accuracy. I started to examine the accuracy data to delve into EFL learners' writing performance. Based on the initial findings of this study, I presented this study at two international conferences (Second Language Research Forum 2020 and American Association for Applied Linguistics 2021). Those two conferences are major conferences in the field of applied linguistics. At the conferences, I received very good feedback from many researchers. The paper was also accepted by AILA world congress 2021 and will be presented in August, 2021.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Because of COVID-19, it took longer to recruit two native English speakers who had experience of teaching EFL learners. Nevertheless, I found the raters last year, and they finished their rating in March, 2021. I am now looking at the accuracy data to gauge the EFL learners' accuracy in their writing.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I am going to analyze the data in terms of complexity, accuracy, and fluency. I will run statistical analyses to answer the research questions for my paper.
In addition, I am going to present this paper at international conferences such as AILA 2021 and prepare for submitting this paper to international journals.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Because of COVID-19, I was not able to travel for international conferences. The conferences switched to virtual conferences, instead.
I am going to use the remaining amount of grants for research purposes such as purchasing electronics or registering conferences.
