Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This study looked at whether Japanese university students could develop intercultural competence in monocultural EFL classrooms in domestic campuses. Results from a one-year longitudinal study with 205 university students suggest that students can become more curious, open to, and respectful of other cultures without going abroad. Results also indicate that incorporating cultural discussions and projects in EFL classrooms increased students' cultural self-awareness as well their awareness of global issues. Students mentioned that not enough intercultural aspects are discussed in other faculties. Results were presented at both national and international conferences for English educators, intercultural competence scholars, and university administrators. The project resulted in two book chapters and one article: 1. [book chapter] Incorporating Intercultural Competence into EFL Classrooms: The Case of Japanese Higher Education Institutions. In K. Hemmy and C. Balasubramanian (eds.), World Englishes, Global Classrooms. 2. [book chapter] The Quest for Globally Competent Human Resources in Japan (accepted; under technical review). 3. [article] Beyond language: fostering an intercultural mindset in foreign language classrooms in Japan (under review).
