Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Four constitutions ("Constitution of 1840," "Constitution of 1852," "Constitution of 1864," and "Constitution of 1887") were enacted successively in the Kingdom of Hawaii after contact with the Americans in the early 19th century. This study explored how the Hawaiian Kingdom interpreted the concept of democracy through an analysis of the process of enacting these constitutions. In particular, this study examined the significance of the first establishment of the codified law here through a detailed analysis of the meaning of the enactment of the 1840 Constitution. As a result, it became clear that there were multi factors that went beyond the "missionary influence" emphasized in the previous studies of Hawaiian history.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
