Outline of Final Research Achievements

Focusing on merit-based educational policy, where the government allocates public funds to children according to their abilities, we show that when inequality widens, an elite education policy; i.e., one that provides more education to children with higher ability, is desirable in order to increase intergenerational mobility.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

先行研究において、世代間階層移動が少ない国では、暴動やストライキ、反政府デモなど政治的不安定を経験しやすいことが実証的に明らかにされている。また、所得格差が大きい国ほど、世代間階層移動は減少することも示されている。まとめると、所得格差の拡大は世代間階層移動を妨げ、政治的不安定性を高めることになる。したがって、所得格差が拡大した場合、世代間階層移動を促す政策を行うことが政府にとって重要となる。
本研究成果は、所得格差の拡大と世代間階層移動の減少を伴う国にとって、世代間階層移動を促すことで政治的安定性を高めるためには、能力の高い子どもへ多くの公的教育を支出することが重要であることを示している。
