Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The objective of this study is (i) to develop a heterogenous-firms model of international trade and inventory management; (ii) estimate the model using firm-level data. Our main research achievements are as follows: First, we finished construction of the model and performed theoretical analysis of the model. Namely, we derived welfare gains from trade; analyzed how extensive and intensive margins of trade respond to reduction of different costs of trade. Thus, we established connection to the literature based on Melitz (2003). Second, we used Chinese firm-level customs data to estimate our model using a part of the data (due to computational limitations). Our estimates show how introduction of inventories into an otherwise standard Melitz model changes estimates of fixed and variable costs of trade.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We started presenting our paper at conferences. Due to COVID-19 reasons, we were not able to present the paper as much as we wanted. At the same time, the work on our paper has not been affected: we made as much progress as we planned.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
During the second year of our project we plan to work more on the estimation of a full version of our model. Also, we will be presenting our paper and incorporating feedback that we receive at presentations.
|
Causes of Carryover |
In the previous year we were not traveling. The saved money from the previous year will be used for traveling and presenting our work in the coming year. Also, as we were finishing our theoretical work, we did not need computational resources. In the coming year we plan to acquire computers for our computations.
