Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study purposes to empirically analyse Asia's silver absorption during the mid-nineteenth century. To quantify the scale and trend of Asia's silver absorption, the study reconstructed silver trade in Asian countries between the 1820s and 1870 using their original trade statistics. Consequently, it found that the value of silver imports from Europe into Asia dramatically increased from average 20,000 pounds in the 1840s to 7 million pounds in the 1850s and to 9 million pounds in the early 1860s. Additionally, to shed light on the mechanism of silver trade in Asia, through application of bullion-points method to a new dataset of silver prices and exchange rates in multiple Asian and European cities, this study revealed that the arbitrage profit by importing silver arose over the 1850s-1860s.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
