Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Using online materials I have been able to submit two research papers on Hakodate (a case study of an Anglo-Danish merchant and a paper American whalers and merchants in the 1850s and 1860s at Hakodate) which are now under review at respective academic journals. In addition I published a working paper on a British company at Hakodate as part of the "commodities of empire" series.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The pandemic has delayed the acquisition of key source materials for this project as travel has been difficult.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Despite the restrictions resulting from the pandemic, I have been able to make good progress with writing papers related to this project based on online archival materials. I hope this year I will be able to travel more extensively to archives within Japan which will greatly help the project. But I am skeptical that I will be able to visit the archives overseas that this project requires to be fully completed. It may be necessary to request an extension of this project for a year given the travel restrictions.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Largely unable to travel due to the pandemic planned research trips could not be carried out. In the next fiscal year I plan to carry out the trips as from both fiscal years contingent on scheduling and the pandemic situation.
