| Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This study examines the dual citizenship claims (or the lack of such claims) among marriage migrant women from the Philippines and Vietnam in South Korea, analyzing how women’s narratives regarding dual citizenship are framed vis-à-vis the normative ideals of citizenship in each state. By drawing on the in-depth interviews with 45 marriage migrant women from the Philippines (35 women) and Vietnam (10 women) residing in urban and rural areas of Korea, this study found that the participants’ differing positionalities in terms of, for example, legal qualifications, country of origin, marital life, socioeconomic status, and lifecycle stage, resulted in differences in the value of claiming dual citizenship, which affected their reasons for claiming or not claiming dual citizenship.

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
I was able to continue gathering data (in-depth interviews with marriage migrants from the Philippines and Vietnam) even during the COVID pandemic although I had to readjust my original goal, which was to reach out to a lot more participants. Most of my participants were still welcoming me contacting them for interviews, probably because I have known them for several years by now. Therefore, despite rather discouraging situation, I think the project is progressing rather smoothly.

| Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I am planning to continue my field work if the situation allows. I will try to do more interviews with marriage migrants about their dual citizenship practice while analyzing the data I already gathered. In addition,I'll try to gather more data in Japan about how marriage migrants in Japan practice dual citizenship which could possibly lead to a comparative study.

| Causes of Carryover |
Due to the COVID pandemic situation, I had to limit myself in terms of conducting field work in South Korea. I managed to do the field work as the situation got better in February, but prior to and after the field trip, it became difficult again.
Therefore, in the next fiscal year, I will focus on transcribing and analyzing the data I gathered from the field trip. If needed, I'll have to hire research assistants who can transcribe interviews. Further, I will also try to plan field trips in the summer as the COVID situation is gradually getting better with the vaccine roll out.
