Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This research project intends to investigate the significance of practicing participatory filmmaking as a pedagogy for advancing active learning and global competence in the university classroom. During FY2020, which was the first year of this research, the unforeseen circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic made alterations in the original data collection plan. Instead of implementing fieldwork overseas, I conducted literature review on the theory and practice of participatory filmmaking to gain a portion of data. Consequently, this led to the enrichment of my theoretical framework and practical employment of the concept of participatory filmmaking. In addition, I initiated and developed a participatory filmmaking project in Kumamoto. In FY2020, collaborating with students in Kumamoto for this study resulted in the production of a short film.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
In FY2020, the COVID-19 global pandemic interfered with my plan of doing fieldwork and collecting data overseas. However, in the circumstances as such, I was able to enhance a conceptual and practical scope for this study by carrying out literature review on the theory and practice of participatory filmmaking. Moreover, I implemented a participatory filmmaking project in Kumamoto, and a short film was produced in January 2021 as it was originally planned.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In FY2021, to examine the possibilities of participatory filmmaking as a pedagogy, I will accumulate data through interviews, surveys, participant observation, and document analysis both in and outside Japan once travel restrictions are eased. In addition, I will attend an international conference for presenting the created film and obtaining feedback. I will also further extend the practice of participatory filmmaking by collaborating with students in Kumamoto continuously.

Causes of Carryover |
The COVID-19 world pandemic hindered my initial plan of carrying out fieldwork and collecting data abroad during FY2020. Hence, the saved amount will be applied as travel expenses to conduct interviews in Europe when international travel restrictions are lifted.
