Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This study examines the significance of practicing participatory filmmaking for advancing active learning and global competence in the university classroom and the impact of showing the produced films on the audiences. In 2020, due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, the original data collection plan needed to be altered. However, I was able to enhance my conceptual and practical scope by conducting literature review on the theory and practice of participatory filmmaking. In addition, by collaborating with students in Kumamoto online, a short film A New Normal for Our Future was created. In 2021, online collaboration resulted in the production of a short film Colorful. In 2022, a short film Kumavel (Kumamoto+travel) was released. I screened the produced films and conducted surveys in Kumamoto from 2020 to 2023, respectively. The data indicate that the films left favorable impressions on the research participants. During 2023, the final fiscal year of the study, the progress of the research project was favorable. I exhibited the films and presented the research findings at international conferences such as the New Directions in the Humanities. Finally, in 2024, the research outcomes were published as articles. The results from this study show that collaborating for filmmaking in the classroom contributes to enhancing active learning and global competence of the students. It also becomes clear that the film screening connects the students conveying their message and the audiences responding and interpreting it diversely.
