Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Using data from the Survey among High School Students and their Mothers, 2012, I examined how the gender gap in college major choice arises. By focusing on mothers' stereotypical perceptions, as well as students' subjective assessments of academic performance and attitudes toward future careers, I have been able to identify some of the mechanisms that lead to differences in the choice of majors between men and women, and the results have been published in several papers. In addition, the paper entitled "The Validity of Proxy Reports of Parental Socioeconomic Status : Evidence from Follow-up Studies of Survey among High School Students and their Mothers" provided a discussion of the survey's methodology. For this work, I received the Award for Distinguished Articles from the Japanese Association for Social Research.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
