Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
This research project aims to explore ways to integrate academics who have diverse backgrounds in Japanese academic society. For the background of the current academic environment, neoliberal contexts, governance, and ranking have been explored. A comparative study about female academics in Japan and Korea has been done with statistical information at the national level. Also, junior female academics at Japanese universities have been explored, focusing on their challenges and experiences. Additionally, a study about the academic identity of higher education researchers has been conducted based on a comparative perspective among Japan, Korea, and Hong Kong under the COVID 19 pandemic. Beyond the original plan, comparative studies were possible to conduct by extending the research ideas.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
It is necessary to develop questions that includes international standards and contextual characteristics in Japan, but it has been challenging to visit international academics and institutions abroad. Therefore, the meetings and discussions have been done online with international colleagues. Thus, only available online data could be collected, and the interview questions which need contextual understanding were limited developed. Moreover, my study's definition of potential interviewees as returnees has to be clarified. There are few international doctoral degree holders in Japan, and it is not easy to find possible interviews. Therefore, the operational definition in the Japanese context should be identified. Considering these issues makes the time delay in confirming diverse dimensions.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the third year of this research project, the interviews with academics who have diverse backgrounds will be conducted. Before conducting the interviews, the researcher will visit several higher education institutions outside of Japan to observe various cases and have implications. In particular, several selected research-oriented universities with more academics having international backgrounds and well-integrated female academic cultures are expected to visit. For the depth interviews, semi-structured interview questions will be confirmed by international and domestic experts on the topics. Also, the data will be transcribed by professional assistants.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Under the Covid 19 pandemic situation, it was almost impossible to visit higher education institutions abroad and attend international conferences and seminars in person. Therefore, travel costs will be used when the situation is allowed. Also, the expenditure is needed for professional transcriptions after conducting interviews.
