Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
According to the research plans, the qualitative approach was mainly used for the study. In particular, the research project advanced to develop interview questions for international academics in Japan based on reviewing previous articles and literature. In depth Interviews have been done with international academics in public research institutes in Japan, and the interview data have been compared with those in Korea. Also, the policy issues and challenges facing female academics have been explored based on the findings from interviews of female junior academics with the national level statistical data in Japan.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
This study could focus on collecting and analyzing qualitative interview data to explore international and female academics in this fiscal year. Although the research plan was to develop a survey questionnaire for returned academics from abroad, potential secondary data was founded. Therefore, the analyses about returnees can be smoothly processed to explore through the data of the international comparative project Academic Profession in Knowledge Society. Since additional interview data was available to compare with other country cases, the possibilities of developing comparative studies for diverse academics were discussed with international colleagues.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The secondary survey data will be analyzed and focused on their academic degree and activities focusing on how their international experiences influence their perceptions and activities in the university. Also, interviews with returnees will be conducted with semi-structured questions to explore their experiences and integrations if the survey respondents agree to join discussions. The results and main findings of the research project will be presented and shared at several international conferences and seminars with Japanese and international academics to have comments for further analyses and develop more comprehensive perspectives to understand the Japanese context with the global environment. Moreover, further studies will be suggested based on this research project to compare other countries and contexts.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Since many international conferences were online (or hybrid) and visiting universities abroad was not easy to manage, the travel cost could not be used in this fiscal year. However, the researcher will join the international conferences in-person and visit universities abroad in the next fiscal year as planned in the proposal. Also, an international workshop will be organized with invited speakers from diverse countries and contexts to share results and discuss relevant issues for the dynamics of academic society with academics who have diverse backgrounds.
