Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Research objective: develop a culturally salient emotion dictionary. Preparation of a questionnaire with emotions (e.g., "happiness") to be evaluated and dimensions that they will be evaluated (e.g., "is it desirable?"). Quantitative text analysis in each culture regarding the emotions. Research progress in 2020: Review various articles and books about emotional differences in distinct cultures; Based on this revision a list of 46 emotions was prepared. Also based on the revision, 7 dimensions (independence, interdependence, valence arousal, desirability, regulation/ display rules) were chose; A tentative questionnaire was prepared; Translation of the questionnaire started in 2020. Collection of text data also started in 2020 (song lyrics); I reviewed methods of analyzing text data.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Covid-19 pandemics made it complicated to collect data from participants. The original idea was to collect in person. Since the pandemics only got worse, I had to prepare online questionnaires. Also, the literature review took longer than expected. Preparation of the questionnaire is going well. Now I am waiting review from the research ethics board of our university. Data collection of text data is going faster than expected.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Once the questionnaire is approved by the research ethics board, I will upload it to a survey website and start collecting data from Japan, USA and Brazil. Text data analysis will also start soon with lyrics. Hopefully expanded to other types of text (literature, internet movie reviews, etc) Once analysed, results will be presented at conferences and sent for publication.

Causes of Carryover |
In the first year, due to the covid-19 pandemics , it wasn't possible to start data collection in person. I had to change the methods, so it was not possible to spend the whole amount that was planned. For this year the budget will be largely used to collect data from participants that will answer the questionnaire. It will become the main output - the dictionary. This will start from late June. Costs include participant reward, cost of maintaining surveymonkey account, research assistant, and translation. Also, the budget will be used to cover costs of presentation and publication. From September to February.
