Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
I completed 2 points of my research plan: III) "Supersymmetry in nanowires induced by spatially-modulated fields" We show how to realize massive or massless 1D Majorana modes with SUSY in nanowires via a lattice of 0D Majorana modes and described their experimental signatures. We wrote 2 papers to be submitted to PRL and PRB by 5/2021. Coauthors: Daisuke Inotani and Muneto Nitta. IV) "HH model and quantum pumps with ultracold atoms" We extended the definition of Chern number to quasiperiodic Thouless pumps, described their experimental signatures [Phys. Rev. Research 2, 042035(R) 2020]. I made theoretical calculations to describe the interplay between topology and quasiperiodic disorder, experimentally realized with ultracold atoms in optical lattices in Kyoto University [Nat. Phys. 2021].

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
I planned to finish two points of my research plan in the first year. The research on both points progressed beyond the original plan. Point III) I successfully completed my plan (I planned to finish in 9 months). Moreover, we had additional results on how to realize 1D Majorana modes. This was not expected and not originally planned. We wrote two papers instead of one, to include all results. I will submit to PRL and PRB after receiving the last feedback from my coauthors. Point IV) I successfully completed my plan (I planned to finish in 4-6 months) and published one paper in PRResearch. Moreover, I collaborated with the experimental group of Kyoto University on this topic. This collaboration led to the publication of a paper in Nature Physics. This was not originally planned.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I am planning to present my research at national and international conferences: 1) The workshop "Bound States in Hybrid Superconducting Nanostructures" (June 2021) organized by the Institute of Physics (IOP) and the Condensed Matter Division (CMD) of the European Physical Society (EPS); 2) The workshop "Theoretical studies of topological phases of matter" at the Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics, Kyoto University, Japan (October 2021), as an invited speaker; 3) The APS March Meeting (March 2022); 4) The Annual JPS meeting in Ookayama University (March 2022). In the second half of 2021, if the pandemic situation will improve, I am planning to visit the research groups of Prof. Hatsugai in Tsukuba University, and Prof. Takahashi in Kyoto University.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Due to the global pandemic, I was not able to travel to conferences and to research institutions abroad and in Japan. The grant money that I did not used during this fiscal year will be more useful in the next fiscal year. I will use it to fund research collaborations and participation to conferences in Japan, and possibly abroad. It is expected that the situation will improve in Japan and in the world.
