Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The original purpose of this project was to study creep deformation and rupture, but the remaining time in FY2022 was insufficient to properly execute the necessary experiments and analysis; thus, dynamic mechanical behavior was studied at a shorter time scale instead. A secondary amine was used to modify crosslinked epoxy networks and thereby greatly improved fracture toughness (over 150%) while maintaining flexural strength and stiffness. This was achieved by in-situ extension of epoxy chains between crosslinks without inducing meso-scale phase separation, as determined by DMA and AFM. Additionally, chain dynamics informed the design of new epoxy-based materials with excellent toughness and stiffness (patent application in progress).
