KeywordsLoop heat pipe / Polytetrafluoroethylene / Melamine foam / Self-adaptive structure
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

We designed, evaluated performance of the dual-evaporator loop heat pipe (LHP). PTFE membranes were used as wick. Operating characteristics of the LHP in various orientations was clarified. Effect of vapor/liquid distribution in reservoirs on the performance was discussed. One article was published on a high impact journal.
However, the pore size variation range of PTFE wick was limited due to its structure. Melamine foam, a novel material with open foam structure and superhydrophilicity which has not been used so far, was proposed. Pore size of melamine foam was controlled from 215 micron to 18 micron with very small changes in porosity and permeability. The melamine prototype exhibited better performance than the PTFE LHP.
