Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The global stability analysis (GSA) framework has been implemented into JAXA's unstructured code, FaSTAR, and named FaSTAR-GSA.
The FaSTAR-GSA code has been successfully validated against the results present in the literature for 2D laminar incompressible cylinders and 2D turbulent transonic buffet. The implemented framework relies on a combination of a time-stepper technique and an Arnoldi decomposition, allowing FaSTAR-GSA to correctly reproduce the buffet instabilities by using 1/1000 of the RAM memory required by other classical GSA codes. The saving in RAM memory allows the study of large 3D complex configurations.
Preliminary studies on unswept and swept wings have been carried out and compared with the experiments performed at JAXA's 2x2 transonic wind tunnel. The numerical results qualitatively agree with the experiments and show that FaSTAR-GSA can capture the main features transonic buffet and predict its onset.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
The implementation of the GSA framework took slightly longer than expected and the investigation on wavy leading and trailing edges with an external company has not started yet. The main GSA framework has however been implemented successfully and the simulations will start soon.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The investigation on unswept and swept periodic wings with wavy leading and trailing edges will start in the near future and it is expected to be completed in the next 6-8 months. The investigation of the final configuration of finite wing will start in 6 months to allow enough time to perform the GSA and machine modeling.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Because of the slight delay of the implementation the costs for "Personnel Expenditure and Remuneration" have not been used yet, but will be used soon. Concerning the "Travel Expenses", due to the COVID19 pandemic, it was not possible to attend conferences, but the budget will be used this and next fiscal year for online and in person conferences.
