Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In this year, age-hardening response of Mg-Li-Al and Mg-In-Gd alloys has been evaluated. The Mg-Al-Li alloys are a combination of undersized elements (Al=1.43 angstrom and Li=1.52 angstrom), while Mg-In-Gd alloys are a combination of oversized elements (In=1.63 angstrom and Gd=1.80 angstrom). A newly developed Mg-8Li-5Al (wt.%) alloy has a high hardness value of 90.2 HV in a T4-treated condition, and shows a peak hardness value of 98.5 HV after artificial aging at 50 oC for only 2 h. A Mg-4.4In-6Gd (wt.%) alloy shows a rather low hardness value of 46.9 HV in a T4-treated condition, but has rapid age-hardening response. To be specific, this alloy could reach a peak hardness value of 51.9 HV after artificial aging at 170 oC for only 2 h.
