Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
A bottom-up assembly of metal redox reactions can realize catalytic systems which are resistant to environmental fluctuations. Our developed system can perform water oxidation, which is indispensable for water electrolyzers used to convert the renewable electricity generated from solar and wind powers into chemical energy such as hydrogen, amomian and hydrocarbons. The oxidizing environment of water oxidation corrodes even state-of-the-art rare metal catalysts, and slight changes of the operating voltage which fluctuates due to the intermittency of solar and wind energy, significantly exacerbate the corrosion kinetics. However, introduction of just one redox reaction can significantly alter the lifetime of the catalyst, showcasing the importance of network design in catalysis research.
