Outline of Final Research Achievements

Some bolidophytes have two stages in their life cycle: a non-motile stage with a siliceous cell wall, and a naked motile stage. To reveal the physiological differences between the two stages and the mechanism of stage transition, we analyzed the characteristics of the culture strains. Based on the differences in chloroplast autofluorescence intensity between the two stages, we established a method to distinguish the stages using a cell sorter. The strains were classified into two types: strains without the motile stage and strains with the motile stage, suggesting that stage transitions are not induced, at least under the culture conditions used in this study. In addition, the growth rate analysis revealed differences in the adaptation to light intensity between the two stages.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
