Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Since the project "Biomonitoring of Red Soil Pollution by DNA-based methods in Okinawa" started, I've being focusing to answer the scientific question 1 "Seasonal variability if prokaryotes" and water samples for DNA and chemistry have being collected since September of 2020 each 2 weeks (i.e. a total of 19 times) in urban and rural areas. Also, physicochemical properties of the water have been recorded simultaneously with the seawater samples. Results of physicochemical properties of the water indicate that the urban areas showed the more variable results in terms of salinity, turbidity and chlorophyl probably due to differences in the freshwater volume that is carried by the streams as well as differences in the land use of the watershed.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Schedule has been slightly delayed since I was on a maternity leave and the sampling started few months later than expected. Seawater collection and CTD data (including temperature, salinity, turbidity or dissolved oxygen) has been collected since September of 2020 up to date and will be continue until next September 2021. DNA data from the first 4 months has been sequenced and the microbial community composition its being under analysis in this moment.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Chemistry analysis will be performed on September and October.
Scientific question 1 from this project will be answered as soon as the sampling is finished and the DNA determined around November-December.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Next fiscal year most of the budget will be employed for DNA sequencing analysis as indicated in the proposal
