Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The recent development of carbon nanotubes (CNT) materials have enabled the innovation of next-generation renewable energy technologies, thin-film silicon solar cells and lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. These technologies can potentially revive the competitiveness of production in Japan. However, the technologies are still in lab-scale studies. This project contributed to the early-stage assessment of the technologies. (1) Working closely with an experiment group, we informed and improved the production processes to minimize the environmental impacts. (2) We modeled the scale-up processes for future mass production, and showed the potential environmental benefits if the technologies were realized. (3) We also quantified sustainability using a new social-LCA approach to highlight the impact on society.
