Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Significant progress has been made this fiscal year in data collection (which helped make up for the delay due the the pandemic in the previous year), publication and research dissemination. Online and in-person interviews have been conducted, and the database on Japanese investments has been completed (and continually updated). Research results have been presented at 6 regional and transregional seminars and conferences. In terms of publications, a working paper has been published, one book chapter is in publication stage, another book chapter has been submitted, and one journal article submitted to a high-impact journal is currently under review.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

Considering the initial delays encountered due to the pandemic, the research has progressed relatively smoothly this fiscal year. Publications in particular has progressed better than initially planned. There are however still some interviews that need to be followed-up.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In year 3, the following activities are planned:
GIS mapping of Philippine coal power plants, quantifying coal emissions, and scenario analysis of coal phase-out.
Follow-up interviews will also be conducted in Japan and the Philippines. Additional publications and presentations in key academic and industry conferences in Europe and Asia are also planned.

Causes of Carryover

Funds which were originally allocated for travel in the original proposal have not been used this fiscal year. It is expected that field travel will be possible in year 3 following the lifting of travel restrictions in Japan and the Philippines. A research assistant has also been hired to help with emissions accounting and scenario analysis.
