Outline of Annual Research Achievements

シンチレータは放射線照射によって発光を呈する放射線計測用蛍光体であり、医療・セキュリティ・資源探査などの分野発展に伴い、シンチレータ材料の需要が高まりつつある。CeやPrなどの発光中心は5d-4f遷移由来の高速な発光を示すことが知られており、Ce:Gd3(Al,Ga)5O12やPr:Lu3Al5O12に代表されるようにγ線計測用シンチレータとして盛んに検討がなされてきた。Sm2+は赤色から近赤外域に許容遷移由来の強い発光を示すことからSi系の光検出器と相性が良いことやチェレンコフ光との区別が容易である点で今後有用となり得る発光中心である。そこで、シンチレータの新たな発光中心としてSm2+に着目しハライド単結晶の合成を行った。一年目に加えてアルカリ土類金属をベースとした6組成のSm2+添加シンチレータ材料の合成を行った。発光およびシンチレーション特性を調査したところ、X線照射下において全ての組成で2価由来の発光が観測された。組成によっては900 nm以上の長波長で発光するものがあり、光検出器の波長感度のために定量評価が困難なものがあったが、ほとんどの組成において137Csからのγ線照射下における波高分布測定が可能であった。試験組成の中でシンチレーション発光量の最高値は33,000 photons/MeVであり、Tl:NaIなどの既存シンチレータに匹敵する性能を示していた。本検討を通してシンチレータ材料開発においてSm2+が有用な発光中心候補であることを見出した。
