Outline of Annual Research Achievements

研究協力者のClive Wilkinsonと協力し、イギリス水路部とイギリス公文書館に保管されている19世紀のイギリス海軍の航海日誌のうち、東アジア、東南アジアを航行した127航海を撮影し、資料を収集した。イギリス海軍の7航海の航海日誌に記載された気象データのデジタル化を行った。これにより昨年度と合わせて薩英戦争や下関戦争に参戦した1863年‐1864年の10隻の船舶の位置情報と気象データが入手できた。アメリカ海洋大気庁が進めている1835-2015年の全球3次元の大気再解析データデータセットの最新版version3を共同でweb公開し、このデータセットに関する論文を出版した。また、このデータセットの初期値に用いられる国際的な気圧データセットの最新版version4を共同でweb公開した。2019年11月4－6日に中国の武漢で開催されたJoint ACRE China, Southeast Asia, and Japan workshopに出席し、アジア各国のデータレスキューに関する研究者と研究交流を行った。研究分担者の塚原東吾、財城真寿美と研究協力者のClive WilkinsonとAlice de Jongとオランダ公文書館に所蔵されているオランダ海軍の航海日誌の調査を行った。また、ライデン大学にてWorkshop on Climate in History in Asiaを開催し、最新研究の情報交換を行った。明治初期の灯台の気温データについて整理を行い、品質管理を実施した。

Reason

本研究課題では歴史の「科学的アプローチ」からの調査を掲げており、船舶の動向を航海日誌から把握することがめざしている。収集しつつあるイギリス海軍の中から、薩英戦争や下関戦争に参戦した船舶を抽出し、航海日誌に記載された気象データのデジタル化を開始した。船舶の位置情報から瀬戸内海の航路が下関戦争後開かれたことが分かってきた。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

引き続き、研究協力者のClive Wilkinsonとイギリス水路部とイギリス公文書館に保管されている19世紀のイギリス海軍の航海日誌の収集を進める。薩英戦争や下関戦争に参戦した船舶の気象データを用いて、この期間の台風を調べる。また、多くの船舶が同時期に同じ場所に停泊しているメリットを生かして、比較観測を行い、気象データの品質管理を行う。オランダ海軍の航海日誌のデジタル化を研究協力者とAlice de Jongと進めていく。江戸時代末期の気温観測が含まれた史料「豊田友直日記」の収集を進めていく。
