Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In 2022, face-to-face focus-group discussions were finally held at two different universities, and data was collected as scheduled. The preliminary results were discussed at two international conferences in the hope to shed some light on the way English language learners verbally communicate their emotions when using English as a lingua franca in an intercultural setting.
For the focus group discussions, three viral videos were carefully chosen as emotion-eliciting stimuli in order to assess how English language learners use verbal language to express their emotions while and after watching the videos. The results showed that none of the participants chose to verbally express their emotions while watching the videos. However, the group discussions revealed that participants experienced a range of emotions while watching the videos, but they refrained from reactive responses. Some of the reasons for the lack of verbal expression of emotion could be: lack of knowledge regarding the linguistic forms commonly used; lack of formal instruction regarding expressive linguistic forms; lack of exposure to English; lack of everyday socialization in English; individual differences and dominant L1 emotional behavior. Teaching expressive language that could be used in a variety of settings, or teaching the appropriate approach to expressing certain emotions in order to avoid appearing insensitive could help students become more aware about the use of the appropriate expressive linguistic forms and such.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
Due to COVID-19 pandemic, face-to-face focus group discussions were difficult to be held, hence data could not be collected as planned, and everything got postponed to 2022. Although I could hold face to face focus group discussions in 2022, the low number of students volunteering for the project (both Japanese and international students) forced me to find a different university to hold the discussions and gather more data, which delayed the whole project's data collection stage to the beginning of 2023.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In this final year of the project, I am planning on conducting some follow-up interviews in order to understand better the reasons why most participants chose not to verbally express their emotions while watching the videos. I am also planning on publishing the results of the entire project in an international journal in 2024.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Due to the fact that all data collection was delayed for the reasons mentioned above, last stage of the project - data transcription - was not possible within the timeframe available. Therefore, another extension was necessary for transcribing the data and publishing the results. In addition, follow up interviews that could not have been conducted in 2022, are scheduled for 2023. I am planning on getting assistance with transcribing the focus group discussions and interviews and publishing the results by the end of the extension period.
