Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this study, new insights were gained from the perspectives of culture and improvisation regarding Claude McKay, Zora Neale Hurston, and Alain Locke, who were black writers and thinkers of the Harlem Renaissance period. While Locke argued that improvisation ensures the authenticity of black culture, he believed it should be placed under the dominance of form. On the other hand, Hurston emphasized that the improvisational nature of black culture arises from a different aesthetic tradition than Western artistic norms. McKay illustrated how black culture, in the context of the diaspora, becomes intertwined with commercialism and is generated improvisationally.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

近年、批判的即興研究（Critical Studies of Improvisation）と呼ばれる学際的な研究分野によって、即興は芸術のみならず人間の創造的な営みや社会活動のあらゆる側面において重要な理念であり実践であると論じられてきた。本研究は批評的即興研究の成果を踏まえ、即興を黒人文化の伝統の枠内に留まる現象としてではなく、20世紀初頭のモダニズムの広がりやアメリカにおける文化多元主義をはじめとする社会文化的な議論に関係する概念として提示した上で、ハーレム・ルネサンス期の文学者が即興についてどのように論じたのか、それらが彼らの言説においてどのような役割を果たしたのかを明らかにする。
