Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study considered a theoretical framework for understanding how the everyday mobility of people with disabilities is socially produced, using an example of the visually impaired, who have the most mobility difficulties among the disabled. A review of the findings of disability studies in geography and mobility studies in the social sciences suggests that in capturing the mobility of people with disabilities, it is necessary to focus on (1) social institutions such as guide helpers, (2) the effects that such institutions produce or the discourses around them have on the embodied practice of mobility, and (3) the ontology of mobility that underpins institutional discourse and embodied practice.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

日本の地理学分野ではほとんど知られていない英語圏の障害研究とモビリティ研究について、主に理論的側面からその成果を検討・紹介できたことが大きな成果であった。それにより、視覚障害者の移動を社会的に生産されたものとしてとらえるための理論的枠組みの構築に寄与できたと考えられる。また、ガイドヘルプという制度は主に分配的正義の観点からその問題点（利用可能な時間数の地域差など）が指摘されてきたが、本研究ではその言説的効果や、それを支える移動の存在論という新たな論点を提示することができた。
