Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
Since this project started, metadata of research papers have been collected and it has been analyzed as originally planned. The data source is Web of Science and publicly accessible Microsoft Academic Graph. Research has been progressed by using this data. The analysis result has been published as a research paper in a journal. One more paper is under review in another journal.
In the first paper, it was examined whether interdisciplinary research (IDR) disproportionally contributes to addressing emerging technological topics in science. A series of analyses by using the metadata of research papers in three selected research fields, published between 2013 and 2015, found supportive evidence.
In the second paper that is currently under review at a journal, it was investigated if IDR imposes a greater impact on advancing science and technology than discipline-oriented research and the role of funding therein. The analysis using all research papers that were identified by Microsoft Academic Graph and Clarivate's Web of Science found the supporting evidence only if the IDR was funded.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
Initially, it was planned to focus on conducting research in the first year and present the research at conferences or workshops to advance the research in the second year. I aimed to publish two papers in academic journals as a final outcome of this research project.
As of April 12, 2021, one research paper has been published in an academic journal (as the first/corresponding author), and one more paper is under review at another journal (first/corresponding author).
Given the research progress thus far, the current status of this research project is found to be on track.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the second year, I will focus on advancing the second paper so that it becomes published in an academic journal while seeking opportunities to present this paper in a workshop or academic conference (if an onsite presentation is possible).
In addition to this effort, I will conduct another research to answer the question of how the role of funding in shaping the way IDR influences the advance of science and technology may differ by country. Currently, this research is at the preparation stage with the collection of the necessary data.
|
Causes of Carryover |
Initially, it was planned to organize an on-site meeting with researchers at Georgia Tech for collaboration for this research project, and hence, spent a part of the grant for the travel expense. However, due to the travel ban across countries by the spread of COVID-19, part of the budget for travel could not be spent in the prior year. Because the travel ban is expected to be relaxed as vaccination progresses across countries, I expect that international travel for research will become available from the fall of this year.
