Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In previous studies, we found that neurotypical Japanese people systematically associate shapes with colors (e.g., circle-red, triangle-yellow, and square-blue). However, the formation process of such association is relatively unknown. Here, we examined color-shape associations, and the relationship between autistic traits and color-shape associations using an online questionnaire survey. The Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ-10) survey was used to examine the autistic traits of participants. We found that the proportion of expected color-shape associations are significantly associated with the autistic traits. Participants with higher AQ scores tend to show less of expected color-shape associations. Thus, the autistic traits might play a role in the construction of color-shape associations.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
The study went on well with the study plan. For the influence of Covid-19, the participants recruiting work was in difficulty, therefore, most of the work was done by online questionnaire survey. However, we have got significant results showing the autistic plays a role on color-shape associations, consistent with our hypothesis. This results provided evidence for the nature of color-shape associations and the “hypo-priors” account for autistic perception.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
Based on previous results, we are planning to recruit participants on behavioral tasks testing the strength of color-shape associations, such as the visual search task, and feature binding task, among participants with developmental disorders and neurotypical controls. We also plan to examine color-shape associations in blind participants, to reveal the visual perception effect on the construction of color-shape associations.

Causes of Carryover |
For the next fiscal year, I plan to use the budget for recruiting participants in behavioral experiments, and blind participants questionnaire survey. For the influence of Covid-19, the travel expense was not used, which we hope to use in the next fiscal year if the situation is in control. The participate fee for international/domestic conferences, English editing fee and publication fee for papers may also be needed.
