Research Project

Project/Area Number 20K22561
Research InstitutionThe University of Tokyo

Principal Investigator

陸 鵬  東京大学, 大学院農学生命科学研究科(農学部), 助教 (20880339)

Project Period (FY) 2020-09-11 – 2022-03-31
KeywordsVmFbpA / Membrane Protein / ABC transporter / Vibrio. species / Iron
Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Rosmarinic acid (RA) was identified as an iron uptake inhibitor of Vibrio bacteria. RA binds more tightly than Fe3+ to VmFbpA, the Vibrio ferric ion binding protein.RA competitively inhibits Fe3+ binding to VmFbpA, and thus inhibits Vibrio growth. Sodium citrate (SC) markedly enhances the RA’s effect to inhibit Vibrio growth. The RA/SC mixture effectively inhibits the growth of vibriosis causative pathogens but has little effect on E. coli. The crystal structures of VmFbpA complexed with RA and in the absence of RA were solved by X-Ray crystallography.
