Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this study, we determined the fine particle protection rate (FPPR) of two types of face masks, namely gauze, surgical, reused following a specific washing method.　Both face masks maintained similar performance after 30 washings compared to new ones. These findings may start the discussion for possibility to reuse face masks, and propose a method for reusing face masks that is suitable for non-medical personnel.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

これまで不織布タイプマスクの使用方法は、ディスポーザブルという見解が一般的であり、ガーゼタイプマスクにおいても再利用した際の微粒子防御率を報告したものはほとんど見当たらない。しかしながら、COVID-19のパンデミック時にはフェイスマスクの入手が困難となり、危機管理対応としてフェイスマスクの再利用が提案されている。本研究結果は、フェイスマスクの再利用の可能性を議論するきっかけとなる。
