Outline of Annual Research Achievements

今年度はすでに所有している試料を用いて、予察的なデータの収集を行った。特に約27億年前のオーストラリアと約25億年前の南アフリカの代表的なストロマトライトの詳細な顕微鏡観察・ラマン分光分析・炭酸塩鉱物の炭素酸素同位体・炭質物の炭素安定同位体分析を実施し、以下の成果が得られた。
詳細な顕微鏡観察により、オーストラリアのチャート中の炭質物質は石英の粒間や硫化物・Fe-Ti酸化物と共存する2種類が認められ、大きさは球状(20-80μm)、フィラメント状(2-10μm)と形態により異なり、球状のものは主に硫化物・Fe-Ti酸化物に、フィラメント状のものは石英の粒間に産出することが明らかになった。形態別の顕微ラマン分光分析を実施したところ、球状に比べ、フィラメント状の炭質物の結晶度は低く、炭素安定同位体値からも有機物の痕跡を確認できた。炭質物質の炭素同位体分析の結果は、-30 ~-47‰である。
さらに、南アフリカの炭酸塩岩ストロマトライト炭質物質の炭素同位体分析の結果は-16~-20‰であり、形態別の顕微ラマン分光分析を実施したところ、球状に比べ、フィラメント状の炭質物の結晶度は低いことが明らかになった。
昨年に引き続き、南インドダールワール岩体のストロマトライトから抽出した炭質物質のFIBを用いた試料を作成し、STEM-EDS分析を試みたところ、炭素以外のAl, K, Si, O等の元素が検出され、ケイ酸塩鉱物と炭質物質のナノスケールの集合体であることが判明した。さらにTEMの画像解析によると、結晶度が低い炭質物質が検出され、このことは、ラマン分析で異なる結晶度の炭質物質が、単一サンプル内に存在することを指示する。
以上から、炭質物の形態ごとの結晶度・炭素安定同位体値に関する基礎的なデータを収集することができた。今後、現地調査を行い、より詳細な地球化学分析を実施する。

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

本研究の目的は、地球最古の化石を含む岩石の分布地域の地質調査を行い、採取した試料の詳細な地球化学的分析とアトムプルーブ分析のための適切な試料選定が含まれている。しかし世界的な新型コロナ感染拡大のため、すでに所有しているサンプルを用いた予察的なデータの取得に留まっている。また本研究の最初の2年間に計画していた現地地質調査に関して延期することになったため、本研究計画はやや遅れている。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

今年度は主にフィールド調査、サンプル選出と基礎データ収集、ナノカーボン粒子の超微細組織観察(国内)、結晶構造解析(オーストラリア)、炭素同位体測定(国内)を行う予定である。新型コロナ感染拡大が徐々に収束し、出入国の制限が緩和され次第、オーストラリア・インドにおいての現地地質調査や大学訪問を行うことを計画している。地球最古の有機物化石を含む岩石の産状と分布、風化変質の程度などを調べるために、オーストラリアの約35億年前のピルバラ地塊の現地地質調査をカーティン大学のFitzsimons教授の協力を得て実施する。現地調査終了後、カーティン大学を訪問し、研究進行に関する具体的な日程及び設備の予約、試料作成に関する打ち合わせを行う。野外調査で採集した試料から詳細な分析や観察するためのサンプルを選出し、炭質物の抽出を行う。前年度に引き続き、今年度前半、現在すでに研究代表者が所有しているサンプル(インドや南アフリカ、オーストラリアの代表的なストロマトライト)を用いて、詳細な分析や観察を行う予定である。後半にはラマン・赤外分光分析および高分解能電子顕微鏡(FESEM, FE-TEM,デュアルビームFIB) を用い、ナノカーボン粒子の鉱物・結晶学的特徴および分子構造について予察的な観察・分析を行う。また、炭質物の形態別の同位体分析を行い、特徴を明らかにすることで、アトムプローブ分析に適したサンプルの選出を行う予定である。

Causes of Carryover

本研究計画では、最初の2年間に計画していたインドとオーストラリアの現地地質調査が、新型コロナ感染拡大により、調査不可能となった。新型コロナ感染拡大が収束し出入国の制限が緩和され次第、両国で以下の通り調査を行う予定である。
インドの太古代のシンブン岩体(34億年前)を中心に野外調査と炭質物を含む堆積岩のサンプリングを行う。インド理科大学院大学 (Bengaluru)のSajeev 教授ならびにインド地質調査所(Kolkatta)のTrisrota Choudhari博士の協力を得て、研究代表者と1名の博士後期課程院生が調査を実施する。さらに、オーストラリアの約35億年前のピルバラ地塊の現地地質調査をカーティン大学のFitzsimons教授の協力を得て実施する。
