Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
To understand the growth process of one-dimensional (1D) van der Waals heterostructures, we perform a comprehensive study on the structural details and formation mechanism of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) synthesized 1D heterostructures. Edge structures, nucleation sites, and crystal epitaxial relationships are clearly revealed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). This is achieved by the direct synthesis of heteronanotubes on a CVD-compatible Si/SiO2 TEM grid, which enabled a transfer-free and nondestructive access to many intrinsic structural details. In particular, we have distinguished different-shaped boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) edges, which are confirmed by electron diffraction at the same location to be strictly associated with its own chiral angle and polarity. We also demonstrate the importance of surface cleanness and isolation for the formation of perfect 1D heterostructures. Furthermore, we elucidate the handedness correlation between the SWCNT template and BNNT crystals. This work not only provides an in-depth understanding of this 1D heterostructure material group, it will also help to improve the design and large scale growth of macroscopic 1D heterostructures for Li-S batteries.

1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.
Reason
We have achieved a thorough understanding on the growth process of one-dimensional van der Waals heterostructure (PNAS 2021) which will help to improve the design and large scale growth of macroscopic 1D heterostructures for Li-S batteries. We are also invited to write a review article to show the application of nanotube based heterostructures for electrochemistry (JEC 2022). Several other joint research outcome with the counterpart PI are also in progress.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In Japan, optimize large area growth technique with focus to increase growth efficiency and decrease cost, adjust the outer material in 1D heteronanotube, try different shell combinations, try to build battery fabrication and testing system in The University of Tokyo with the help of Tsinghua group. Visit Tsinghua group, large scale fabrication of Li-S using 1D vdWH based electrode; fabricate different combinations of SWCNTs based 1D vdWH cathode, fabricate and test 1D vdWH based electrode with ultra-high S loading.

Causes of Carryover |
Because of the restriction of international travels, the 次年度使用額(B-A) will be used for travel cost for next year.
