Research Abstract |
The goal of this study has been to clarify the correlation among tense, aspect and modality systems (TAM systems) through a contrastive study of Japanese and Korean. We collected data that reflect the correlation among the TAM systems not only from standard Japanese and Standard Korean, but also from Miyako Ryukyuan (Ikema dialect Miyako in particular) and the Jeju dialect of Korean. We conducted fieldworks to collect natural discourse data, transcribed them and analyzed the TAM systems. The research results have been presented at conferences in Japan and abroad. An international symposium was held in the final year inviting experts from Korea, Japan and the United States toexchange views on the TAM systems of these languages.
