Research Abstract |
This 11-nation comparative study investigates possible correlations between media contents (TV news, newspapers, internet news) on one hand, and political engagement/political knowledge, on the other. Our data suggest that public service television is especially effective in imparting knowledge and promoting a culture of democracy, in which news exposure, public affairs knowledge, sense of democratic competence and political interest feed off each other. In case of Japan, however, interest towards international affairs as well as knowledge scores on international politics remained low despite its strong PSB presence in its media landscape.
