| Research Abstract |
近年、宗教施設の一般人への部分的開放で注目されているベルギー南部・ワロン地方のオーバル修道院でも、使用石材の塩類風化が深刻な問題となっていることが判明している。最終年度であるH23年度は、本遺跡を重点的な調査対象とし、フランス・ランス大学・准教授のDr.Thomachot-Schneider(本研究の連携研究者)らとともに研究活動を進めた。
オーバル修道院の歴史は1000年以上も前にさかのぼるが、1637年のフランス-スペイン戦争により初期の建造物群が破壊され、12～13世紀に2種の天然石灰岩で建設された中世遺跡群が残存している。これらも1794年のフランス革命で半壊されたが、遺った部分が遺跡として一般公開されている。20世紀に入り近代の建造物群が同一敷地内に建てられ、現在は修道施設として利用されている。皮肉なことに、天然石材が使われている中世建造物遺跡では深刻な劣化見られず、人工石材で建立された近代建造物でテナルダイト(Na_2SO_4)による風化が顕著である。現地調査では、環境データを収集し、人工石や河川水等を持ち帰った。人工石については、間隙径分布測定を行い、その結果を用いて易風化指標を計算するとともに、SEM-EDSにより元素マッピングと局所化学組成値を求めた。河川水についてはイオンクロマトグラフィー分析を行った。
これらの調査結果より、最も顕著な風化が見られた側点では、温度・湿度とも激しく変動するため、テナルダイトの相変化に伴う破壊力で石材が劣化していることが分かった。人工石の易風化指標値は、11.88%台を示し、他の石材と比較しても風化しやすい性質を持つことも確認された。また、人工石にも土壌水にも硫酸塩の起源となる元素(Na,S)がわずかに含まれていた。以上より、本遺跡を劣化から防ぐためには、水分移動を防ぐとともに環境変動をできるだけ抑える必要があることが分かった。
