Research Abstract |
In the conventional study of Zola, rarely is the relationship between Zola and Baudelaire taken into consideration. In this study, we show that Zola, the theorist of naturalism, expresses an antipathy towards Baudelaire, but that Zola, defender of Manet, was, in reality, much influenced by Baudelaire. In addition, it is generally allowed that Zola was somewhat separate in his ideas from Manet and the Impressionists in the late 70s. However, in this study, we demonstrate that a certain correspondence in the relations of Zola and Manet exist up until the early 80s, and that many correlations can be seen between Zola’s novels and Manet’spictures.
