Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to observe how participants in conversation establish recognition and understanding of their intended referents, and to discuss how such interactional activities of reference establishment contribute to the achievement of the overall goals of conversation. Through the analysis of person reference in Japanese storytelling, I point out some phenomena which demonstrate that the activities of reference establishment not only refer to persons but also contribute to the achievement of the storytelling.
