Research Abstract

熱と物質の鉛直輸送に重要な寄与をするとされる大気乱流とその主要因であるケルビン・ヘルムホルツ(KH)不安定はそのスケールが極めて小さいことから直接観測はこれまで極めて困難とされてきた。これをMUレーダーのイメージングモードによる超高分解能観測に加えて、他周波数帯レーダーとライダー観測を援用して、総合的に究明することを目指している。特に、自由大気中におけるKH不安定の構造をかつてない高分解能映像観測で解析することに注力している。その成果として、まず2008年10～11月、世界で初めて実施された周波数イメージングモードによる長期観測データを解析することにより、ジェット気流近傍のKH不安定の「気候学」を明らかにしつつある。このために計算機処理によりKH不安定を自動判別するアルゴリズムの開発にも成功した。これにより判別された多くのKH不安定の事例から、とくにKH不安定の発生頻度などは先行研究で明らかになっている境界層大気の場合とよく似ているが、個々のKH不安定発展過程は著しく異なるものであることが初めて明らかになりつつある。次いで対流圏界面褶曲近傍のKH不安定の構造を詳細に解析し、その構造変化とエネルギー消散率・鉛直乱流拡散係数を明らかにした。加えて巻雲・高積雲底などに出来るいわゆる乳房雲の生成に関して、MUレーダーイメージングモード超高分解能観測とX帯およびKa帯レーダーとライダー観測データと詳細に対比して、KH不安定に起因した大気の上下運動よることを、初めて観測的に実証した。これらの成果は国内外の研究集会で発表されたほか、国際誌にも掲載・投稿中である。
