Research Abstract |
The ciliary beat frequency(CBF) of guinea pig fimbria during the ovarian cycle was measured by video microscopy using a high-speed camera(500Hz). A moderate increase in estrogen concentration, [βE_2], maintains a high CBF(15.5Hz) during the ovulation and then a further increase in [βE_2] decreases CBF(13.5 Hz) in the ovulatory phase. In the early and late luteal phase, low [βE_2] and progesterone concentration, [PRG], increase CBF to 17Hz and 15Hz, respectively, and in the middle luteal phase, a high [PRG] decreases CBF(~ 12Hz). Thus, the CBF of the fimbria was controlled by signals via βE_2 and PRG receptors in guinea pigs. Moreover both βE_2 and PRG antagonized each other in CBf regulation, that is βE_2 inhibits PRG actions and contrary, PRG inhibits βE_2 actions.
