Research Abstract |
Improvement of the woodworking lathes advanced at lacquer ware or wood turning product areas in the Meiji term. A Suzuki style lathe of the Aizu lacquer ware product area and a "Yamanaka style" lathe of the Yamanaka lacquer ware product area spread through other product areas over a very wide area. The bearers of a Suzuki style lathe which acquired the patent in Meiji 30(1897) were kijiya group, ordinary local turners. Although this lathe enabled mass-production of wood turning for lacquer ware, many difficulties were followed on spread. It became clear from the spread of "Yamanaka style" lathe that the special lathe manufacturer existed and craftsmen holding the outstanding skill moved between product areas. Moreover, the award history in an exposition or a competitive exhibition guaranteed their skill, and became one factor of the spread of lathes.
