Research Abstract |
In this study, I have reviewed the institution of recognition of belligerency in the period between the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century . The main finding of this study is that recognition of belligerency was an agreement between the rebels on the one hand, and the lawful government or the third States on the other. The content of this agreement was to apply the laws of war or the law of neutrality among them. Recognition of belligerency has been a relatively practicable and effective means to regulate civil wars, and remains significant in contemporary international law.
