Research Abstract |
This research focused on the comparison between American companies and a British firm in the mining industry in the 1960s and 70s. The vertical model means an American management style which had both mining and refining sectors and the horizontal model indicates a British style which concentrated on mining sector and diversified minerals. In the 1970s mineral nationalizations in developing countries and stagnation of industrial output in the US caused the decline of the vertical model of the American resource industry. On the other hand the British horizontal model showed high performance by taking advantage of output increase in the Continental Europe and Japan and by being able to avoid burdens on the refinery sector.
